A teenage driver in New York state, USA, tried to get off a drink driving charge by saying that the alcohol on her breath came from kissing. The 17 year old driver was over the limit by a factor of two and had been seen swerving across lanes.
She was stopped in Manhasset, on Long Island. Next to Manhasset is an area called Great Neck - reflecting that shown by the defendant. When she was pulled over she said to the police: "I didn't drink! I was kissing a boy who was drunk."
She may also have offered the watertight legal defence: That's the swally!

That's the swally - what's the swally?
Swally is another word for "alcohol" - in particular, in the form of a socially-acceptable drink, not an ingredient in a cleansing wipe or window cleaning fluid.
"That's the swally!" is an excuse, a description for a certain type of otherwise inexplicable behaviour, or if the law courts recognise it: a sound legal defence. When you spill some lager down your newly-ironed shirt - that's the swally. When you read about someone who has tried to have sex with the pavement - that's the swally. When you see someone slaloming down the road at 2 in the morning, casually eating a pizza out of a box while speaking to themselves - that's the swally.
This blog hopes to highlight some of the more entertaining, amusing and downright depressing uses of the demon drink that deserve a shout out.
